With the recent approval of the Senate for Mr. President to have 20 Special Advisers, I recommend that it is important and timely for a Special Adviser on National Integration.
Nigeria cannot achieve sustainable national development and transformation without an effective scheme or active systematic principle of national integration and patriotism.
The national integration of Nigeria is not just about equality in political appointments or achieving a near perfect federal character principle in public sector appointments or civil service employment and more so, it is now clearly beyond the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps and Federal Unity Schools etc.
With Nigeria’s uniqueness in diversity, there is an urgent need for an active system or principle of national integration that can be put to use or established by both the old and young in Nigeria in unity of mind and purpose.
National integration is the oil of peaceful co-existence; interreligious unity and patriotism; it is the locomotive wheel of equity, fairness and justice as a consequential factor in the equation of national development of any country.
It is the bond and togetherness between people regardless of their location, caste, creed, religion and gender etc. National integration is not just a mentality but should be a practical approach of knowledge synchronization and civic duty in oneness.
That is why the President and Commander- in-Chief of the Armed Forces does not only need a Special Adviser on National Integration but should appoint someone who has a groundbreaking system or knowledge of national integration; he should not be a religious leader of any mainstream religion but is open-minded with understanding of humans and the times we live in; to establish programs and ideas that shall set up Nigerians in oneness and in unity of mind and purpose for national development against parochial sentiments and felony, religious bigotry and tribalism etc.
The Special Adviser to the President on National Integration shall work hand-in-hand with the President and with such organizations as the Nigeria Interreligious Council (NIREC); the National Orientation Agency (NOA) etc to promote and establish a national unity structure and patriotic daily service for everyone to jointly be a part of; irrespective of their religion, caste or ethnicity and location etc as far as they are citizens and inhabitants of Nigeria.
Achieving national integration on a foundation of national unity and patriotic daily service is a necessary and sufficient condition to troubleshoot the mind of the individual to live rightly and to jump the hurdles of corruption, ethnicity, religious bigotry and selfish leadership; to build strong institutions and people who do not only have great passion and the resilience to succeed but shall be bounded in one creed of nationhood for national development.
The Special Adviser to the President on National Integration should not be a card carrying politician. He shall not belong to any political party or be a public servant. He should be slightly under forty or forty years of age at most.
A qualified person must show or develop a Proof of Concept and plans on how to achieve the goal of national integration within the next four to ten years.
